The broad purpose of the occupation is to provide excellent patient care by obtaining images of a high diagnostic quality using a range of high cost and complex imaging equipment. This will include imaging using x-rays and cross-sectional imaging methods (Computed Tomography or CT), fluoroscopy and Interventional Radiology and being able to assist in other imaging modalities such as Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Breast Imaging and Nuclear Medicine.
Diagnostic Radiographers work with a broad range of and work independently to assess, authorise, obtain consent and undertake individual examination requests for radiography procedures. The work is physically and mentally demanding and involves direct patient contact, which can be of a personal nature.
The apprenticeship will take 3 years to complete, with 2 days per month taught delivery and 2 days per month self-study. The remaining time will be spent in the work place and on relevant clinical placements.
On completion of the course apprentices will be awarded the BSC (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography. Apprentices will have the knowledge and skills so that they can register with the Health and Care Professions Council and apply for membership of the Society and College of Radiographers.

Applicants must:
• Hold Maths and English Language GCSE Grade 4(C)or above (or equivalent) and be able to produce their certificates.
• Have completed the Level 5 Assistant Practitioner Apprenticeship following the specialised radiography pathway

Top-Up Degree Entry Route:
Applicants who already hold a relevant foundation degree (Assistant Practitioner) can apply for the top-up route, with a view to joining the course at year 2 via recognition of prior learning.
